ASO

For more than 70 years, the Alabama Symphony Orchestra has served Alabama, providing quality performances of varying styles of music and presenting some of the finest guest performers of the day. The outstanding musicians of the ASO have brought to life some of the world’s most treasured musical masterpieces as well as introduced listeners to exciting new works and composers.

In a 2007 review by Alex Ross of The New Yorker magazine, he remarked: “I understood more deeply that building a major orchestra isn’t a matter simply of gathering the best players from the leading conservatories and paying a celebrity maestro millions to lead them.  Great performances can happen anytime skilled players respond with unusual fervor to a conductor whose vision is secure.  That’s what happened in Alabama, when an underpaid by committed orchestra put together as potent a performance of Beethoven’s revolutionary symphony as I’ve heard in several seasons.”    Mr. Ross then went on to list the ASO’s performance of the Beethoven 3rd Symphony as one of the ten best concert performances of 2007 that he experienced.

This kind of publicity not only helps promote the ASO as an outstanding orchestra with a clear artistic identity, it also helps drive the national reputation of Birmingham and Alabama as a leading cultural center.
