Lois Pickard Music Scholarship Competition

2010 LOIS PICKARD SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION

 

A program sponsored by the Symphony Volunteer Council

of the Alabama Symphonic Association, Inc.

 

ELIGIBILITY

                           The Lois Pickard Scholarship Competition is open to serious and gifted young musicians ages 12 – Senior High School.  Students of strings, brass, winds, percussion and piano are eligible to enter in one category only. Entrants must be legal U.S. citizens and reside in one of the following states: Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, and Tennessee. 

 

Previous First Place winners may enter after one year.  

 

If a student is selected as the Grand Award Winner, that student will not be eligible to win the Grand Award in any future competition.

 

 

THE WINNERS MUST BE AVAILABLE TO PERFORM FOR THE

LOIS PICKARD AWARD LUNCHEON ON THURSDAY,

FEBRUARY 11, 2010 AS THIS IS THE TIME THAT AWARDS ARE MADE.

 

 

SCHOLARSHIPS

String Division: (Daniel Szasz String Scholarship)

                   In the event a Grand Award Winner is selected, that winner will make an appearance with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra during a Red Diamond Family Concert and will receive an additional $1,000.00 scholarship.

ENTRY FEE

and, along  with a self-addressed, stamped envelope, mail to:

ENTRY DEADLINE

Entries must be postmarked by January 1, 2010

 

REPERTOIRE
Acceptable literature for the competition includes any one movement from the standard concerto repertoire
written for the entrant's instrument.  A copy of the work to be performed must be provided to the judges. 
Xerox copies are not acceptable.  The decision of the judges is final.

  

TIME LIMIT

                  Maximum time of performance is 15 minutes and ALL accompanists are
urged to cut orchestral interludes
  
ACCOMPANISTS 
All entrants must perform with a live accompaniment.  Accompanists are the responsibility of each entrant.  Entrants are strongly encouraged to bring their own accompanists;  however, a limited number of accompanists are available for a $50.00 fee which includes one-30 minute rehearsal prior to the competition, plus the competition on January 16, 2010.  This time will be arranged by the accompanist.

             

PERFORMANCE  TIME
 Entrants will be notified by mail two to three weeks prior to the competition of their approximate performance time.  Competition begins at 9:00 am with contestants to be scheduled in instrumental groups.  No schedule changes are possible.  Entrants must note on the Application Form any expected time conflicts in scheduling their audition time.

             

WARM-UP FACILITIES
Practice rooms will be available on Saturday, January 16, 2010 for warm ups.  You should plan to be 45 minutes to an hour early to be assured of a Warm-Up Room
